Cold Storage Monitoring
A series of five cold storage warehouses needed connectivity and needed a real time temperature monitoring system to verify storage temps remained at -5F.
Problem
The facility was a set of 5 leased warehouses. Three of the warehouses had access to broadband internet and two did not. The warehouses were used to store seafood harvested from Alaska that was to remain at -5F until sold to distributors. These distributors required proof that all products were stored at temperature at purchase to ensure freshness.
Solution
To overcome the warehouses without internet access, a point-to-point radio network was installed that provided up to 1 Gbps of connectivity to each warehouse. The warehouses were then modeled and outfitted with a Wi-Fi network to provide 97% coverage. Each freezer room and the corresponding chiller units were connected to IoT sensors.
Result
The sensors provided status every five minutes. Distributors had real time access to logs via a web portal to verify that the required temperature was maintained, and the local engineering staff had real time metrics to monitor the health of the chiller units.
